Due to the addition of 2-2.5% molybdenum, the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel 316L is significantly better than that of the standard austenitic grades 304 and 304L, SA588 Grade K specification. The 1.4404 material is resistant to intercrystalline corrosion when welded! but not resistant to sea water. Best corrosion resistance is given with a polished surface.
